I'm Alasdair Dodds and I'm a Management Accountant in NHS Tayside. I was previously part of the NHS Finance Management Scheme.
I realised when I was at university, I didn't want to do a job that was chasing pounds for shareholders. I wanted something that would make a genuine difference. So, I looked in to the public sector and came across the NHS scheme.
I thought it was a fantastic opportunity that offered everything I was looking for, which was support to become a Chartered Accountant, a real role with real responsibilities and a platform for me to progress throughout an organisation.
Without a doubt, it's the people I work with. The NHS has some of the most fantastic people I've ever met working for it and it's an absolute pleasure to work alongside them every day.
From a work perspective, I've met one on one with my Chief Executive and my Director of Finance. These are fantastic opportunities that I don't believe you would get working in other organisations.
I've also had the opportunity to sit in on someone going through surgery. Where else does a finance trainee get to say that?
Watch the video below to find out why I took part in the scheme and why I'd recommend the NHSScotland Management Training Scheme to others.
My advice is to always ask questions. There's no such thing as a stupid question and you can always learn something new. Be open to new ideas. It's a great opportunity to learn and there are people working across a range of specialties.
I had an absolutely fantastic experience and would highly recommend the NHSScotland Management Training Scheme to anyone.
